Taylor Swift Before the Spotlight: Friends and Classmates Spill the Tea

Ever wonder what Taylor Swift was like before she became a superstar? Some people who knew her back then have shared their stories.

It’s a question that intrigues many of us: What were celebrities like before they found fame?

So, what do people say about young Taylor Swift?

Some of her former classmates weren’t too flattering about her school days. TikToker Jessica McLane claimed that while in school, “most people hated her,” highlighting her habit of writing songs about people she knew. McLane remarked, “There were not a lot of people in high school who had nice things to say about her.”

But not everyone shared that view.

Gena Levengood, who was two years behind Swift in school, recalled asking the future star if she planned to audition for the children’s American Idol spin-off, American Juniors. “She said she considered it but decided not to, because there was a line in the contract about not being able to release an album within a certain number of years,” said Levengood.

It seems Taylor was set on stardom from a young age, even practicing her autograph in her notebook, according to local musician Pat Garret, who played with her band earlier in her career.

Ronnie Cremer, a tech support worker who taught Taylor guitar from when she was around 11 years old, shared, “I said I’d teach her what I know. She was sweet and kind and eager.”

But how were Taylor’s skills early on?

“She was never a guitar virtuoso,” said Cremer, “but the idea was to teach her how to project into a microphone and play as if on autopilot — to allow her to perform.”

Taylor famously moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue her music career. She attended Hendersonville High School, where her ambitious declarations didn’t always go over well. A former classmate revealed that she always had big ideas, rolling up saying she was going to be a star. “We kind of rolled our eyes because, being in Nashville, we hear that a lot,” said the classmate. “It was just such a strong statement for someone of that age.”

Of course, Taylor Swift went on to become one of the few people who made that bold declaration a reality. While some thought the young Swift was “a bit of a brat,” her talent was undeniable. The classmate noted, “Everyone was pretty taken aback. Like – she had just come out of nowhere.”

Taylor Swift’s journey from a determined young girl to a global superstar is a testament to her talent and drive.
