A special pill taken before a night out could stop people from suffering hangovers.
Scientists have genetically engineered a probiotic to produce an enzyme that allows people to recover from drinking alcohol more quickly with fewer associated health problems.
The boffins used ADH1B to accelerate the breakdown of alcohol in the body and tests conducted on mice found that the probiotic reduced alcohol absorption, prolonged alcohol tolerance and shortened recovery time after exposure to booze.
Although drinking less is better for people’s health, the findings could now lead to treatments for liver and intestinal disease.
Dr. Meng Dong, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, said: “We believe that genetically engineered probiotics will provide new ideas for the treatment of liver diseases.
“We are excited about the improvement in acute alcohol-induced liver and intestinal damage.”
