What you need to know ahead of Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

The iconic tabletop game is finally hitting the big screen in the UK on Friday 31st March, but before you see it, there are a few things you should know about this fantasy blockbuster and the game it is based on. 

There are 12 character main classes in the game, however the film focus primarily on the 6 demonstrated through its key cast.

Chris Pine is a bard, a magical musician, Michelle Rodriguez is a Barbarian, a rage fuelled warrior, Rege-Jean Page plays a Paladain, a holy warrior, Justice Smith portrays a Sorcerer, Hugh Grant plays a Rogue, a stealthy con-artist and Sophia Lillis is a druid, a priest who harnesses the power of nature.

DND has many world to explore, but Honor Among Thieves sets its story within the Forgotten Realms

The Forgotten Realms was created in 1967 by Ed Greenwood and was designed as a fantasy land, closely connected with our own world, but forgotten over time, hence its name. The focus of many campaigns would take place on a continent known as Faerûn.

The film rights to Dungeons and Dragons was bought by a 19 year old.

Filmmaker Cournety Soloman, created Sweetpea Entertainment at 19 years of age to buy the film rights for Dungeons and Dragons, resulting in the 2000’s film he produced and directed.

Honor Among Thieves isn’t linked to the pre-existing film trilogy

A trilogy of Dungeons and Dragons films were made between 2000 and 2012. The first film, which starred the likes of Marlon Waynes and Jeremy Irons, bombed in the box office, whilst its sequels released direct to DVD.

The film has gone through extensive legal disputes

Hasbro filed a lawsuit against Sweetpea Entertainment over the rights to Dungeons and Dragons.

Hasbro planned to reboot the property with Univeral, whilst Sweetpea planned to make a film for Warner Bros. Ultimately Hasbro won the case and moved the reboot to Paramount pictures.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hits UK cinemas March 31st.
